Peyronie's Surgery Post-Operative Instructions

What you can expect

  • Bruising and some mild bleeding from incision site(s).
  • Bruising and swelling of scrotum and penis for the first 2 weeks.
  • Possible pain and/or burning with urination.
  • Painful erections that will gradually improve over a few weeks
  • Penile dressing that stays on for 48 hours. Can remove if having difficulty urinating.

What you should do

Day of surgery

  • Do not drive
  • Do not make important personal or legal decisions or be left alone without assistance
  • Take it easy and avoid unnecessary activity
  • ICE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND-apply (never directly on skin, use towel or cloth) intermittently (20 minutes at a time) for 24 hours

First day after surgery

  • Keep the wound dry for 2 days after surgery
  • ICE IS STILL YOUR BEST FRIEND

After the second day

  • Leave the dressing on until you take your first shower (2 days after surgery). If the dressing falls off, don't put it back on

1-6 weeks after surgery

  • Can resume exercise once penile swelling has resolved
  • NO SEXUAL ACTIVITY FOR 6 WEEKS
  • NO BATH/HOT TUB/SWIMMING FOR 6 WEEKS
  • If you had a grafting procedure
    • 2 weeks after surgery: pull and stretch glans of penis outward with gentle massage of graft area twice daily for 4 weeks
    • Begin VED 2-4 weeks after surgery as directed by your surgeon

Diet

  • Drink plenty of fluids (6-8 glasses of water daily).
  • Resume regular diet at home.
  • If you have a special diet due to diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease etc, you may resume eating when tolerated.

Medications

  • Pain control with 600 mg ibuprofen and 500 mg Tylenol every 6 hours unless your doctor states otherwise. These medications can be staggered so that you can take something every 3 hours.
  • Narcotics are not necessary
  • Resume all medications you normally took before surgery, unless instructed otherwise.
  • Resume Aspirin and blood thinners as directed by your physician.
  • If you had a grafting procedure
    • 1 week after surgery: Sildenafil 25 mg or tadalafil 5 mg nightly for 6 weeks to encourage blood flow

Bowel habits

  • Avoid constipation to prevent straining (do not strain when having a bowel movement).
  • Increase fiber in your diet
    • Fruits, vegetables, salads
    • Metamucil
  • Drink plenty of fluids (8 glasses of water a day)
    • Can add prune or apple juice
  • Stool softeners
    • Colace
  • Laxatives
    • Milk of Magnesia, Miralax etc. Bathing
  • Shower daily beginning 48 hours after surgery.
  • Gently wash the incision with soap and water, rinse, and pat dry.
  • No baths, hot tubs, or swimming for 6 weeks

Reasons to call your doctor

  • Incision becomes red, swollen, opens, or has pus-like drainage.
  • Skin around your incision becomes warmer than elsewhere.
  • Inability to urinate for more than 8 hours
  • Chills or fever greater than 101 degrees F.
  • Nausea and vomiting or inability to keep down fluids.
  • Severe pain not controlled by pain medication.

Additional instructions

  • Given on a case by case basis. Ask your surgeon if any other instructions are necessary.
